Haines and the Chilkat Valley are famous for the Bald Eagles that congregate here. The eagles begin to arrive in October, and by November there are literally thousands of eagles gathered in the Chilkat Valley.
Joe Ordonez offers private photo workshops for select participants. Joe is a local and has been guiding in Haines since 1986. In addition to photography, his knowledge of the local history, Native culture and natural history add depth to the experience.
These workshops are designed for one or two individuals at a time. A variety of options, from one-day tours, to multiple-day workshops complete with lodging are available.
In October, bald eagles and fall colors are a highlight, along with a chance to still see brown bear before their winter hibernation.
In November and early December, Joe can take you to the best places to photograph bald eagles. The weather can be extreme, but the eagles tough it out to feast on a late run of salmon. The low-angle light that time of year is amazing, and the giant mountains, frozen rivers, and snow-covered trees provide a stunning backdrop. In the evening, there is the possibility of Northern Lights. Trumpeter swans, moose, and a variety of other Alaskan birds and creatures add interest. It’s the eagles that steal the show.
